The Substance Film
The filmmaker's daring satire addresses the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics as well as the dreaded aspects of growing older. Demi Moore offers a brilliant portrayal as Elisabeth, a mature film star demoted to starring in a fitness program on the small screen. Edged out due to her unscrupulous employer her manager Harvey, she seeks out an enigmatic and gruesome treatment called "The Substance". This creates a new version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in a steadily more toxic connection between the two. This Friday, Paramount Plus
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This suspenseful story includes Keira Knightley as Laura, an ace reporter who takes a break from writing about world issues to embark on an opulent ship with a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her husband, plus additional extremely wealthy guests. Yet once an unknown lady goes overboard overnight and all passengers claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Streaming currently, Netflix
Presence Film
Steven Soderbergh tests his directorial skills with this nifty supernatural story captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their recent residence, the filming device – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. The daughter appears conscious of the poltergeist, and it seems guarding her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, with a twist that may be unexpected. October 11th, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
This Self-Referential Film
Cage fully commits to his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He plays a self-obsessed celebrity named Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to visit a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by the CIA to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's unique performing skills proves useful. Saturday 11 October, prime time, the Channel 4 network
The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well despite the lack of a sequel. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, a series of disappearances has left the local kids on edge. When Finney is taken by “the Grabber” and held captive in a basement, he fears a terrible outcome. However, the non-functional line in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators offering help, and the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for greed in this director's delightfully tacky true story of the disgraced religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield portrays the venal Jim, who states at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye begin monetising the people's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, however Jessica Chastain succeeds to present Tammy Faye in a likable light. Next Tuesday, late night, the Film4 channel
This Espionage Thriller
This week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh delivers a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars used by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He is tasked to discover a mole inside the organization from a group of five – one of whom is his spouse. The two stars excel of deadpan cool, so a delicious psychological game of fact versus fiction develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
